Heatmap Is Hiring a Full-Stack Developer
Come work with us!

Heatmap News, the award-winning climate and clean energy media company, is looking for a versatile full-stack developer to help build and improve Heatmap News and Heatmap Pro.
This is a broad engineering role for someone who is comfortable moving between product development, backend services, data systems, and front-end work. One day might involve building a new feature in Go and BigQuery, another might mean improving an interactive map or data visualization, debugging a subscription flow, or working within our RebelMouse publishing platform.
The ideal candidate is a pragmatic developer who enjoys solving real product problems, can work independently, and is comfortable jumping into unfamiliar parts of a system when needed. You do not need to be an expert in every technology we use, but you should have strong fundamentals and be interested in working across the stack.
Responsibilities include:
- Building and maintaining features for Heatmap Pro, our data and intelligence platform for the energy transition
- Developing backend services, APIs, and application logic primarily in Go
- Working with large datasets in BigQuery, including SQL queries, data pipelines, aggregations, reporting systems, and data-driven product features
- Building and maintaining web interfaces using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Go templates, templ, and HTMX
- Developing interactive maps, charts, and other data visualizations
- Working with MySQL and Redis for application data, caching, authentication, rate limiting, and other product infrastructure
- Building and maintaining integrations with external services and APIs
- Working within RebelMouse, Heatmap News' publishing platform, to develop custom pages, templates, subscription and account experiences, advertising integrations, and other site functionality
- Troubleshooting issues across the full application stack, from browser behavior and CSS to API responses, SQL queries, caches, and production services
- Improving application performance, reliability, testing, and deployment processes
- Working closely with editorial, research, product, sales, and other teams to turn ideas and business needs into working software
- Participating in code review, testing, deployments, and ongoing maintenance of production systems
Our technology includes:
Go, templ, HTMX, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, BigQuery, MySQL, Redis, SQL, Google Cloud Platform, Cloud Tasks, scheduled jobs, APIs, Docker, GitHub Actions, Playwright, and Leaflet.
On the publishing side, we do substantial custom development within RebelMouse and integrate with systems including HubSpot, Stripe, Google Ad Manager, OneTrust, and other third-party platforms.
You do not need prior experience with every item on this list. We care more about strong engineering fundamentals, curiosity, and the ability to learn and work effectively across different parts of the stack.
The ideal candidate is:
- A strong generalist who is comfortable working across backend, frontend, data, and infrastructure
- Proficient in at least one modern backend programming language; experience with Go is preferred but not required
- Comfortable working with SQL and relational or analytical databases
- Experienced with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS and able to debug browser-side problems without relying entirely on a frontend framework
- Comfortable reading an existing codebase, understanding unfamiliar systems, and making careful changes to production software
- Able to think through data models, APIs, application architecture, and user-facing behavior rather than focusing narrowly on one layer of the stack
- Detail-oriented and willing to investigate difficult bugs rather than work around them
- Comfortable context switching between larger product initiatives and smaller fixes that keep a live product running smoothly
- Self-directed, communicative, and comfortable working in a remote environment
Experience with media, publishing platforms, data products, mapping/GIS, cloud infrastructure, or the energy industry is a plus, but not required.
The salary range for this position is between $100,000-$120,000. Competitive benefits, unlimited paid time off, and a generous equity plan, which gives employees a real stake in the company, are also offered. This position is remote.
Interested candidates should send a brief cover letter and resume to john@heatmap.news. Links to a GitHub profile, portfolio, or examples of relevant work are encouraged.
